DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Ardmore Foundation and Holland Oil will sponsor The Mad Hatter’s UnBirthday Celebration tomorrow, March 31, starting at 10 a.m. at the Akron-Summit County Main Branch Library, 60 S. High St. Events will include: Dave Henterly: Spoons and Washboard Music Man at 10 a.m. in the main auditorium; the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at noon in the main auditorium; and make-it-and-take-it crafts from 1 to 4 p.m. in the children’s room. At the noon tea party, Akron’s own Mad Hatter — P.R. Miller — will draw the names of donors and coloring contest winners from his top hat, and trivia and word and math riddles can be solved for prizes. Holland Oil is sponsoring a coloring contest in March at 52 Holland Oil stores. Coloring sheets can be purchased for a $1 donation to the Ardmore Foundation. The Ardmore Foundation provides quality-of-life enrichments for individuals with developmental disabilities in Summit County. March is MR/DD Awareness Month. CLEVELAND — The Australian Adventure will reopen for the season at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo April 1. The zoo’s own Outback features exotic animals, a contact yard for up-close animal encounters, a 19th century ranch house and a treehouse. Visitors can head “Down Under” for an Aussie expedition that includes Koala Junction and Wallaby Walkabout. These exhibits feature koalas, red and gray kangaroos, Bennett’s wallabies and wallaroos. Also in Australian Adventure is the animal barn and contact yard where visitors can enjoy up-close encounters with domesticated animals, including sheep, goats and donkeys. Australian Adventure also includes the Reinberger Homestead, a ranch house with animatronic animals and interactive displays, and the Yagga Tree, a 55-foot simulated Australian baobab tree that is a one-of-a-kind play area. Beginning April 1, admission to the zoo and The RainForest is $9 for adults and $4 for children ages 2-11. Children younger than 2 and zoo members will be admitted for free. The zoo is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily.
DOWNTOWN AKRON — A colloquium to explore the “psychological autopsy” of Howard Hughes will be presented by Dr. Raymond Fowler, past president and former chief executive officer of the American Psychological Association. His talk, titled “The Psychological Autopsy: A Case Study of Howard Hughes,” will take place at The University of Akron (UA) April 5 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Student Union Room 335. DOWNTOWN AKRON — “Macbeth” will be center stage during the 2006 Shakespeare in the Spring Celebration, sponsored by The University of Akron (UA) Department of English April 6 at the Martin University Center, 105 Fir Hill. The events are free and open to the public. James Slowiak, UA professor of theater arts, will direct scenes from “Macbeth” performed by Akron actors from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. in the South Room, and Laura Bates, professor in the department of English at Indiana State University, will present a videotape of a live performance of Indiana maximum-security prisoners performing scenes from their version of “Macbeth.” At 5 p.m., “To Know My Deed ‘Twere Best Not Know Myself’: The Criminal Nature of Macbeth,” will be presented by Bates in the Annual Shakespeare Lecture in the South Room. Following the lecture, the winners of the UA Shakespeare Essay Contest will be announced. In addition, a tribute will be paid to longtime Shakespeare Festival patron Cathryn Carroll Taliaferro, who died in May 2005. A Shakespeare Gala Birthday Party will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the ballroom. Hors d’oeuvres and birthday cake will be served.
CLEVELAND — HealthSpace Cleveland will host a Parent & Tots Day April 6. The day will include several activities that promote good health, physical fitness and fun. The event will offer two sessions, one from 10 a.m. to noon and the other from 1 to 3 p.m. Preschool-aged children and their parents will be encouraged to play together as they learn about health. Parents who register by March 31 will pay $10 per adult and tot team (one parent and up to three tots). HealthSpace Cleveland members will receive a $2 savings. After March 31, the Tot Day fee will be $15 per team. Tot Day is designed for children ages 2-5 with their adult partner. Infants and toddlers also are welcome. WEST AKRON — The Urquhart School of Scottish Dance and its competition team the Tighnacreige Highland dancers will host Taste of Scotland April 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Northwest Family Recreation Center, 170 Shatto Ave. The family-oriented event will feature the dancers who take Scottish dance through the city of Akron Recreation Bureau’s dance program taught at the center. The school’s award-winning dancers who will perform include: Becca and David Gressock, Kelsey and Sydney Luyster, Liz Mitchell, Kate Walsh and Whitney Williams. Recently, Sydney Luyster won four gold medals at a competition. The event also will include live bagpipe music, Scottish food, a “Dogs of Scotland” dog show, story telling, crafts, mini Scottish country dance workshops, as well as exhibits featuring Scotland tartans, castles, dances and more. DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Thespian Troupe of Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts will participate in a nationwide recognition celebrating the 100th anniversary of Nobel-winning playwright Samuel Beckett’s birthday. The troupe will perform readings from Beckett’s works at the Akron Antiquarian Book Fair April 8 at 1 p.m. The Educational Theatre Association and publishers Grove/Atlantic Inc. sponsor the event across the country throughout April. Beckett’s influence extends to protégés like Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter, Edward Albee, David Mamet, Christopher Durang, Patrick Marber and Suzan-Lori Parks. This year’s book fair will take place April 7 from 3 to 8:30 p.m. and April 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the John S. Knight Center, 77 E. Mill St. Admission to the book fair is $4; however, the Beckett readings will take place in the concessions area on the second floor outside of the book fair entrance, and will be free.
