Celtic Club plans Scottish-American bash in Bath
BATH — The Celtic Club will sponsor the Fourth Annual Cuyahoga Valley Tartan Day April 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Montrose Zion United Methodist Church, located at 565 N. Cleveland-Massillon Road.
Tartan Day, officially recognized by U.S. Senate Resolution 155, honors the many contributions Scottish-Americans have made to the character and development of the United States. Summit County Executive James McCarthy issued a proclamation designating April 8 as “Cuyahoga Valley Tartan Day” in Summit County and recognizing The Celtic Club for its role in helping to preserve and promote Scottish heritage and culture in the community.
Tartan Day will feature entertainment by the Akron and District Pipes and Drums, Silent Lion, the McConnell Scottish Dancers and the Marine Corps JROTC Color Guard (from East High School in Akron). A prayer and blessing will be offered by the Rev. Walt Chisholm, of Montrose Zion. Meggan Conti, a 2003 St. Vincent-St. Mary High School graduate, will perform the American national anthem, and Joan Pierson will perform “Scotland the Brave.”
The event will be hosted by well-known Kent poet Merle Mollenkopf, and a workshop will be conducted by Karen Babb for the Northeast Ohio Folk Harp. Scottish food will be available from Heather MacNaughton and British Pastries, and vendors will offer Scottish clothing, jewelry, artwork and more for sale.
In addition, the Celtic Club will be awarding a scholarship to the 2006 Ohio Scottish Arts School in Oberlin to a member of the Akron and District Pipes and Drums.
Admission to the event is $7
for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and younger.
