GREATER AKRON — On April 9, District Eight President Candy Brooks, of the West Farmington Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) 7200 Auxiliary, will attend the VFW Auxiliary Junior Girls’ Conference in Defiance. Also attending will be District Eight Junior Vice President Patti Gavin and Warrine Yerkey, District Eight chaplin, both of the Akron VFW 8975 Auxiliary. This year is the 70th anniversary of the VFW Auxiliary Junior Girls. As of October 2005, Junior Girls numbered 2,208 in 165 units. The purpose of the Junior Girls Units is to install in youth a firm belief in the principles of the Republic and reverence for the flag of the United States; to develop character, cooperation, leadership, self-reliance and a willingness to assume responsibility; to assist the Ladies Auxiliary and the VFW in their activities; and to train girls for future membership in the Auxiliary. Membership in the Junior Girls Unit is open to girls from ages 6 to 16 who are directly related to members of the VFW. The Ladies Auxiliary VFW donates to fund two Junior Girls Unit Scholarships given annually. District Eight is comprised of members from Summit, Mahoning, Portage and Trumbull counties.
GREATER AKRON — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, which serves as the civilian, nonmilitary component of the Coast Guard, operates with 33,000 volunteers in more than 2,000 cities across the nation. Some of the roles in which auxiliarists are active include aids to navigation, career counselors, marine safety, member training, marine dealer visitations, operations, public affairs, publications, public educations, personnel services and vessel examiners. In addition, auxiliary members are specially trained to perform operational missions, including search and rescue, port safety and security surveillance, marine environmental protection and ice patrol. Members also respond to requests from the Coast Guard for help in providing additional communication during marine events, boat races and tallships visits. Anyone interested in communications also is welcome to volunteer. Radio communication watchstanders (station dispatchers) also are needed. Those involved in information systems manage the information relating to auxiliarists, their duties and their awards. This department is also responsible for the maintenance of the division and district Web sites. GREATER AKRON — The Third Marine Division Association will host its annual family reunion Aug. 9-13 in Milwaukee. The headquarters hotel is the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. Anyone who served in, was attached to or served in support of the Third Marine Division at any time since it was formed Sept. 16, 1942, is eligible and invited to attend.
