Celebrate spring with annual ride
GREATER AKRON — Area cycling enthusiasts will get rolling in earnest April 8 at the 14th annual “Think Spring” ride, which follows three routes of varying lengths through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP).
Sponsored by the Akron Bicycle Club (ABC), “Think Spring” marks the official start of the Northeast Ohio cycling season. The ride is free and open to the public and will take place regardless of weather conditions. Helmets must be worn on this and all club-sponsored rides.
Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Ledges Shelter, located on Truxell Road about one mile west of Akron-Cleveland Road, in the CVNP.
Riders may choose to follow one of three routes: a 16-mile ride, which is mostly flat and ideal for families, and a 20-mile and 35-mile route. The longer routes take riders into the valley, past the Blue Heron Rookery, Hale Farm & Village and other historic sites in the CVNP. The ABC will provide maps.
A potluck dinner and drawings for door prizes will be offered after the ride. The club will supply soups, bread, drinks and plastic utensils. Participants should bring a dish to share and their own cold nonalcoholic beverages.
The ABC includes riders of all skill (and speed) levels. Most club members live in Summit, Medina and Portage counties, although membership is open to anyone. During the primary cycling season (April through October), ABC club members usually have at least 10 rides to choose from each week. Rides range from family and social style (ice cream rides, ride to a Cleveland Indians’ Game) to fitness rides of 50 miles and more.
