SUMMIT COUNTY — The United Way of Summit County has announced the final results of the 2005 United Way/Red Cross Campaign, with the community contributing $11.6 million, according to officials. The amount represents a 2 percent increase over the 2004 campaign and one of the highest percentage increases among Ohio’s larger United Way entities. Also, the number of donors of $10,000 or more annually has grown from 67 to 102 in two years. Those 102 individuals contributed more than 10 percent of the total raised. “Year after year, the compassionate people of Summit County show that they’re concerned about people throughout the community, and they put their trust in United Way to improve lives,” said David Brockman, board chairman. GREATER AKRON — The local chapter of Zonta International, a women’s philanthropic organization, is calling for applications for Zonta International’s 2006 Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship. The scholarship is intended to further the education of women pursuing business management degrees. It is available to a woman entering their third or fourth year of college. The application deadline is April 15. This scholarship is named for Klausman, of the Zonta Club of Syracuse, N.Y., who understood the importance of helping women become business leaders, according to Zonta officials. GREATER AKRON — Information on the natural hazards that typically affect Ohio has been available through a link on the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Web site for a few years. But now the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness has its own Web site for safety and preparedness information. Its address is www.ocswa.ohio.gov. The 2006 spring guide is available at www.ema.ohio.gov/pdfs/severe_weather/Spring2006.pdf. The site includes dates of Ohio’s Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week, Lightning Safety Awareness Week and Winter Severe Weather Awareness Week. Also included is information on making disaster plans for the home and pets; making preparedness kits for the home and vehicle; and safety tips for tornadoes, floods, thunder and lightning storms, extreme heat, winter storms and home fires. MEDINA — The Medina County Women’s Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation will host a grant proposal writing workshop April 27 at the Medina County Career Center, 1101 W. Liberty St. The workshop will be presented by a representative from the Foundation Center of Cleveland. Designed for proposal writers representing nonprofit organizations, the workshop will instruct participants in the key components of grant writing and respond to the questions that first-timers often have about the grant application process. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and the workshop will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Reservations are required, and seating is limited. The cost is $10 per person.
