DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., will host its 34th Annual Bake Sale April 12-13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring Greek pastries including baklava, galatoboureko, koulourakia, kourambiethes, paximadia and Easter bread. In addition, on April 13 lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church reception hall. Gyros, homemade soup, Greek salad and desserts will be available for purchase. The event funds the work of The Philoptochos Ladies’ Society, the local chapter of the philanthropic arm of the church, which supports local, diocesan, national and worldwide charitable, religious and service organizations. MAYFIELD HEIGHTS — Neurosurgeon Robert White will address “The Bioethical Black Hole: Where Are All the Catholic Scientists?” at the spring installment of Theology on Tap, a lecture series on religious issues. White’s talk will take place April 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fox and Hound English Pub & Grille, 1479 S.O.M. Center Road. DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Rev. Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, president of the Chicago Theological Seminary, will address the congregation of First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 E. Market St., April 23 at 10:30 a.m. Thistlethwaite’s appearance is part of a month-long celebration of the reopening of the church’s historic Meetinghouse, part of the $3.6 million restoration of the church exterior, Meetinghouse and its Casavant Freres pipe organ. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ since 1974, Thistlethwaite is the author or editor of 10 books and has been a translator for two different translations of the Bible. She also testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee during the confirmation hearings for Chief Justice John Roberts and has written extensively on the role of faith in modern life and of the costs of war. BATH — The Bath United Church of Christ will host a Stephen Series Caring Ministry Workshop April 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with refreshments. The half-day workshop consists of three sessions, including: “Ministering to Those Experiencing Grief”; an introduction to the Stephen Series — a system of lay caring ministry which leaders use to help members provide one-to-one Christian care to people in need; and “How to Care in a Distinctively Christian Way.” The cost of the workshop is $15 per person or $50 for a group of four or more from the same congregation.
