Cub Scouts host Pinewood Derby

FAIRLAWN — Cub Scout Pack
3390 hosted the Old Portage District Pinewood Derby
inside Summit Mall March 18. Fifty-two Scouts from 12
different packs participated in the event. A crowd of
more than 160 people gathered to watch the racers compete
for top honors in the Tiger Cub, Cub Scout and Webelos
categories.
The derby cars raced down the six-lane aluminum track to the sounds of contemporary music. Races were monitored via a computer, which recorded results that were accurate up to one-thousandth of a second. A large projector system was used to immediately display the results to the crowd. Shown above right, children of all ages surround the track to get a closer look at the speeding cars. More than 160 people attended the event.
Webelos winners are pictured above, from left: Jacob Heffernan, Pack 3380, third place, with an average scaled speed of 225.3 mph; Shawn Hauffman, Pack 303, second place, with an average scaled speed of 226.2 mph; and Mike Newcomb, Pack 3001, first place, with an average scaled speed of 227.1 mph.
