Coventry track teams to host Norton

COVENTRY — The Coventry High School track teams will host Norton High School for a Portage Trail Conference (PTC) meet May 2 at 4 p.m.
The Coventry girls team has a dual-meet record of 3-3-1.
Junior Ashley Kaltwasser has posted times of 15 seconds in the 100 hurdles and 44.2 seconds in the 300 hurdles.
“We have competed in invitational tournaments in the last three weeks,” said Coventry girls coach Randy Scava. “She has set the meet record in the 300 hurdles for three weeks in a row. She’s explosive.”
Senior sprinter Kate Moorehouse has been battling injuries and is trying to get back to full strength. She competes in the 400 meters and the 4x400 and 4x200 relays.
Juniors Christine Sadusky also has performed well in the 400 meters.
“Hopefully, by the end of the season we’ll have a good 4x400 relay team,” Scava said.
Junior Tiffany Seckel and sophomore Lauren Stephenson have both thrown the shot put 30 feet and the discus 100 feet. Sophomore Lois Boggs is not far behind them.
The Lady Comets have a young corps of distance runners led by freshmen Kate Winkler and Mandy Milhoan.
“We’ve had spring break and band trips to deal with,” said Scava. “I’d like to have a couple meets where everyone is here and healthy.”
The Coventry boys team will see some competition from the Norton boys team, which has a 4-4 record. The Panthers defeated Barberton High School April 13 but lost to Crestwood and Kent Roosevelt high schools April 18. Norton also lost to Manchester High School April 20.
Norton boys coach Ryan Shanor said the PTC has been tough this year, as Manchester, Field, Ravenna and Kent Roosevelt high schools all have strong teams.
“Picking up another league win would be nice for us,” he said. “We didn’t win a meet last week, but three of our four relay teams had personal bests.”
