Bath Elementary celebrating life of fifth-grader
By Kathleen Folkerth
BATH — Alexandra Jones was a passionate reader. Now fellow students will be able to indulge in one of the girl’s favorite pastimes — reading “Nancy Drew” books — thanks to donations made in memory of the Bath Elementary School fifth-grader.
Dedication of a bench and the
“Nancy Drew” book series, along with the
planting of a flowering pear tree, will take place
tomorrow, June 2, at 9:30 a.m. at the school. Alexandra
was killed in a car accident April 14, during the district’s
spring break.
Bath Elementary Principal Fred
Tomei said Alexandra’s friends, Joanie Garcia
and Evan Sasowsky, came up with the idea for the dedication.
“When it first happened,
they wanted to know if we could do something,”
Tomei said.
Through money donated from all the
Revere school district parent-teacher associations, a
bench was purchased at a discount from Dimitroff Furniture
in Bath. A plaque was also purchased with the PTA
funds.
The “Nancy Drew” books
were donated by the Revere School Players, Tomei said,
while Suncrest Gardens donated the digging of a hole and
the tree to be planted on the school grounds.
“The kids will dedicate
the bench and have a tree planting,” Tomei said.
“It will be a celebration
of her life.”
Alexandra, the daughter of Darryl
and Shawna Jones, of Copley, is fondly remembered by Tomei.
“She in every sense of
the word was a true young lady,” he said.
Darryl Jones said his family,
including Alexandra’s four siblings, will
be at the event.
“People have been so kind,”
Jones said. “I can’t tell you how overwhelmed
we’ve been at people’s thoughtfulness.”
He said the family is touched
by the efforts of the school to remember Alexandra.
He added that residents throughout the community have
been a big help to the
family.
“I’ve been amazed at
how people, even casual acquaintances, have gone out of
their way to help out,” Jones said.
The dedication and tree planting
are open to the public. For more information, call the
school at (330) 523-3802.
