Ready, get set ... read!

GREEN — Sign-ups have begun for the summer reading program at the Green and Portage Lakes branch libraries.
The reading program is for all ages, said Lisa Naim, Portage Lakes youth librarian, and every time someone reads a book, he or she can fill out an entry slip at the library for a weekly prize drawing for different age groups.
This year’s prizes include tickets to area attractions, gift cards, Akron Aeros tickets and books, according to Mary Tanner, youth librarian at the Green Branch.
Both branches also are featuring free summer programs for all ages, including sessions for school-age children with animals from the Akron Zoo, Mad Science, puppets and a ventriloquist, and programs for teens and adults. A Baby-N-Me Time will be offered in August at the Portage Lakes branch.
“We have something for all ages,” said Naim. “If you’re looking for something free and fun this summer, come to the library.”
“The program will keep kids’ reading skills sharp over the summer,” said
Tanner. “Adults can read all the new best-sellers and win prizes.”
Keeping her reading skills sharp is 7-year-old Dana Anthony, shown at top, who quietly reads a book at the Green Branch Library while she waits for her family to finish their selections.

Meanwhile, pictured above middle from left, siblings Katie, 2; Jeremy, 5; and Charlie Brown, 8, hang up paw prints with help from Ione Cowen, early childhood librarian at the Green Branch. The paw prints are on the Wall of Readers at the library.
Registration is ongoing for the reading program, which runs through Aug. 5. Call the Green Branch at (330) 896-9074 or the Portage Lakes Branch at (330) 644-7050 for more information.
