Lessons come to life at Safety Town

FAIRLAWN — Soon-to-be
kindergartners learned the dos and don’ts
for safety at Safety Town, which was hosted by
the Fairlawn Police Department June 12-16.
According to Amy Wentz,
records coordinator for the department, 75 students
from Fairlawn and Copley took part in this year’s
week-long camp, which stressed bike, school bus,
gun and fire safety and how
to avoid “stranger danger.”
During the bike safety portion,
children lined up to learn how to follow traffic
signals, as shown at top left.
The importance of avoiding
strangers was demonstrated with the help of Officer
Greg Casanova, who posed as a stranger, shown
below left, while Jack Carroll wisely rides away.

Casanova repeated the exercise
with Danny Reagan, pictured below, reminding the
youngster that he should not speak to strangers.
Safety Town took place in
two sessions, one in the morning and one in the
afternoon. The Fairlawn Safety Town is one of
many organized by area communities each summer.
Wentz said the popular program has been taking
place annually in Fairlawn since the 1970s. —
