Reader adds extra information to SEI article
To the editor:
In her Page 1 story June 22 (“Math at zoo? ... at ballpark? Learning goes 24/7”), writer Holly Pupino did a great job capturing the collaborative spirit of “Learning 24/7: Community as Classroom.”
Summit Education Initiative (SEI) has worked with partners — community organizations, middle-grade youngsters and their families from Akron Public Schools, Barberton City Schools, Coventry Local Schools, Hudson City Schools and Tallmadge City Schools — who tested the activities, and educators from these same districts who helped design them. The article underscored Akron Public Schools’ involvement, but we also had great participation from these other districts. We really are trying to create the opportunity for educators across Summit County to learn about and engage with community organizations to offer out-of-school learning experiences. Working together, middle-grade youngsters and their families as well as youth-serving organizations now have fun activities that reinforce the state’s tough math standards. We’re proud that these activities are now part of the programming at all of the Akron-Summit County Public Library branches, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens and other sites.
To get a complete listing of activities and where to find them, call SEI at (330) 535-8833. Summer is a great time to begin taking advantage of this new community resource!
