Burn victims share stories and some wet, wild fun

NEW
FRANKLIN — Dozens of young burn victims gathered
to spend a wild and wet week at Portage Lakes State
Park.
Sponsored by the Aluminum Cans for Burned Children organization, the burn camp included Fire Truck Day Aug. 10, with a number of local fire departments participating to create a gentle gauntlet of wet fun.
Firemedics aimed their hoses, set on mist, to rain down on participants.
Children played in the water and some also got a chance to be on the other end of the hose.
Pictured at right, Alex Hennis, 11, of Norton, stands with Copley Fire Department Firemedic Pat Friend, who helped him aim the hose at others.
The Akron Fire Department also trucked in foam to give
children another dose of fun, as shown at top. Tristan Bard, 3, of Bath, is shown above right playing in the sea of foam. Tristan’s mother, Maryke Bard, is the clinical coordinator of Akron Children’s Hospital’s Burn Unit.
Afterward, campers enjoyed a picnic with firemedics.
The annual camp brings burn victims ages 7-17 together to share stories and participate in a number of activities.
