DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Canal Square YMCA will kick off a year of activities with a rededication ceremony celebrating its 75th anniversary tonight, Sept. 21, at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony, open to the public, will take place in the Canal Square Ballroom. Community members are invited to share YMCA memorabilia, photos and stories and might be asked to loan historic items to Akron Area YMCA for a book that will present a history of the organization. SUMMIT COUNTY — According to organizers, 160 cars and trucks loaded with confidential documents participated in the first Free Shredding Day offered by Neoshred Inc. and the Summit/Akron Solid Waste Management Authority (SASWMA). “This event was a great success,” said SASWMA Executive Director Yolanda Walker. “First, over 28,380 pounds of paper were diverted from the landfill and will be recycled into new products, such as tissue paper and paperboard. NORTON — Norton Mayor Joe Kernan has announced that Halloween Trick-or-Treat for the community will take place Oct. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m., in conjunction with Barberton’s event. Kernan suggested all neighborhoods plan to participate on the same night to coordinate efficient use of safety personnel.
