DOWNTOWN AKRON — Mix 106.1 FM (WVNO) will have its first “Cure Kids Cancer” Radiothon to raise money and awareness for the Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Akron Children’s Hospital. The radiothon will air Sept. 21-22 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. live from the Showers Family Center. On Sept. 23, the radiothon will air from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. live from Mix 106.1 studios in Mansfield. DOWNTOWN AKRON — A free stroke support group meeting and question-and-answer session will take place Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. at Neurology & Neuroscience Associates, 130 W. Exchange St. The speakers will be Dr. Hugh Miller and Ruthann Ferik, MSN, CRNP. DOWNTOWN AKRON — The University of Akron’s Audiology and Speech Center will host four hearing programs in September and October. All sessions start at 10 a.m. The first took place Sept. 19 and covered hearing aids. Subsequent programs will be: Sept. 26 — hearing and hearing loss and understanding audiograms; Oct. 10 — assistive listening devices and demonstrations; and Oct. 17 — making the most of listening with hearing loss and tips for listeners, friends and family. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends or family members. The center also offers information and testing for tinnitus, a condition marked by ringing in the ears or the perception of sound in the ears or head when there is no external sound source. DOWNTOWN AKRON — The University of Akron will host the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation national educational tour Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside of Bierce Library on Buchtel Common. On the Way to the Cure — Komen on the Go is a nationwide nine-week, 36-stop public tour that brings life-saving breast health information to women of all ages. The initiative features the Komen-on-the-Go pink trailer, which converts into an interactive learning center with computer kiosks, breast cancer educational materials, breast self-examination guides, local volunteer information, tips on how to be an effective co-survivor, and an 8-foot “graffiti wall” for students to share a memory or pledge their personal support to end breast cancer.
