DOWNTOWN AKRON — John Kovatch, of Green, has joined The University of Akron as associate vice president/controller. Kovatch will be responsible for overseeing general accounting, purchasing and the management of student accounts and general bursar functions. Kovatch comes to UA from a 30-year career with the Akron Beacon Journal, where he had a number of positions.
GREEN — Elizabeth Soto was crowned Overall Winner of the American Muscle Summer Shape-Up Challenge in early September. Soto, from Jackson Township, trained at American Muscle, 4745 Massillon Road, for a 12-week period and went from a size 8 to 4, lost 6.25 inches and gained 1 pound through exercise and nutrition, according to trainer Summer Montabone. GREEN — Adam Pilz, with K and S Greenhouse, on Cottage Grove Road, has joined the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET). The association provides ongoing educational and safety programs and features a national certification program that ensures members have the knowledge and technical expertise necessary to perform their jobs at the highest standards. PLANET is a national trade association representing more than 4,400 green industry service providers nationwide that specialize in design/build/installation, interior plantscaping, landscape management and lawn care. DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Ohio Small Business Development Center (OSBDC) at the Summit Medina Business Alliance will offer a free “Business Basics Workshop” Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Akron-Summit County Main Library, 60 S. High St. The workshop, for those who have started or are interested in starting a business, will detail the fundamentals of getting started in either a commercial lease or a home-based location. Participants will receive the business plan outline during the session. The licensing sources and general application forms provided through the Ohio Business Gateway at www.Ohio.gov will be discussed, and participants are asked to review the Web page information prior to attending. BRECKSVILLE — The American Chemical Society of Akron and Cleveland will host a joint meeting Oct. 18 at Noveon Inc., 9911 Brecksville Road. The event will begin at 5 p.m. with registration and a social hour, followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and a seminar at 7 p.m. The seminar will be presented by Chris Jenson, of Fiberstars Inc., in Solon, on “Fiber Optic Technology in Lighting — Changing the Way People Light Their Spaces.” Dinner is $25 for ACS members and the general public and $10 for students.
