Resident urges voters to support change on state BOE
To the editor:
For voters interested in reforming public school funding, the race for the State Board of Education [District 7] is crucial. Tom Sawyer is challenging Taft-appointee and incumbent Deborah Owens Fink. Tom is the best candidate for the job because he considers the public school funding crisis a key responsibility of the board. Owens Fink has ignored this for far too long; instead, she has focused her attention on approving charter schools and inserting her religious views into the science curriculum.
In her tenure on the board, Owens Fink has failed to step up and fight for fair public school funding. She has spent her time approving an unprecedented number of privately owned charter schools.
She has used her position on the board to pave the way for charter schools, while my daughters, who attend Akron Public Schools, have lost their music, sports and foreign language programs. Tom Sawyer believes this is wrong and he aims to push for positive change.
When Owens Fink isn’t busy fighting for charter schools, she seems obsessed with the idea of teaching her religious faith in science classes. Meanwhile, in the real world, our public schools are poorly supported, and a seat on the board that could be used to help the children of Northeast Ohio achieve a fair and thorough education is wasted on fringe issues.
Tom Sawyer believes in a sound and true science curriculum that sticks to established science, not speculations such as intelligent design creationism.
Let’s get our children and Ohio prepared for the challenges of the 21st century by supporting fair and full funding of our public schools and a focus on real science in our science classes.
