Community gets sneak peak at Resnik CLC
WEST
AKRON — Students and teachers who will be moving
into the new Judith A. Resnik Community Learning Center
got a glimpse of the future Oct. 26 at an open house
at the new school.
The two-hour event allowed children and their families the chance to check out the new building, the first school completed in the Akron Public School (APS) District’s $800 million building project.
Shown at bottom right, Carol Weber, of Fairlawn Heights, shows her sons Alex, 5, and Jacob, 6, a portrait of Resnik that will hang in the school’s office. Resnik, a West Akron native who attended the site’s previous school, Fairlawn Elementary School, died as a crew member of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986.
The Henrys — sisters Rachel, 8, and Emma, 5, pictured above right — take a break by the shiny new lockers in Rachel’s third-grade reading classroom.
Checking out the learning resource center is third-grade student Jaylen Caffee, 8, shown at right with his mother, Jackie Sheeley.
The
Speckers, of Fairlawn Heights, pause before heading
into the new school, as shown at top. Pictured in front
are Andy, 7, and Heidi,
6, who will attend the school, with sister Sarah, 11,
and parents Wendy and Bob in back.
The finishing touches are being put on the building, and students are expected to move in before the winter break. Fairlawn Elementary students have been attending classes in APS’ Central Learning Center, at 400 W. Market St., since last August.
