Veterans’ Day events
MEDINA — The Medina Community Band will perform its annual Veterans’ Day Concert, “Reflections of Peace,” tonight, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 606 E. Washington St. The concert is free and open to the public. Donations of nonperishable canned goods or money are encouraged. The concert will feature patriotic music and participation of those representing Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith communities and others who work to bring peace through the military. Special guest conductors will be Edward Lichtenberg, Amy McArtor, Gail Sigmund and Vicki Smith. Special speakers will be the Rev. Steve Brunovsky, of St. Francis Xavior Church; Staff Sgt. Glenn Kreisher, of the Ohio Army National Guard; Enid Lader, director of congregational family education at Beth Israel Temple West; Michelle Powell, director of Let’s Make a Difference; Alkarim Lakhani, a computer programmer; the Rev. Sharon Knowles Kiesel, interim pastor of Medina United Church of Christ; Dennis Hanwell, Medina police chief; Pat McDaniels, director of wellness ministry; and the Rev. DOWNTOWN AKRON — WKYC-TV Channel 3 anchor Tim White, a brigadier general in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and retired Brig. Gen. Thomas Luczynski, of the U.S. Army Air National Guard, will speak at The University of Akron’s Veterans’ Day observance Nov. 10. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a free breakfast at the Martin University Center, 105 Fir Hill, and move to the flagpole on Buchtel Common at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will include a wreath laying, 21-gun salute and C-130 flyover. It is being coordinated by the university and the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps 42nd Ohio Volunteer Battalion. All events are free and open to the public. WEST AKRON — Bishop Joey Johnson and the 3rd Day Ministry of the House of the Lord will host Veterans’ Day services Nov. 12. At 8:45 and 11:30 a.m., special observances will take place to honor past and present members of the U.S. Armed Forces at 1650 Diagonal Road. A special reception will take place after each service for veterans, active military personnel, their families and friends.
