DOWNTOWN AKRON — Sister Helen Prejean, a lecturer on capital punishment and author of “Dead Man Walking,” will share her experiences in her talk titled “Dead Man Walking — The Journey Continues” at the First Friday Club Luncheon Dec. 1 at noon at The University of Akron Martin Center, 105 Fir Hill. Sister Prejean began her prison ministry in 1981 when she dedicated her life to the poor of New Orleans. Sister Prejean will share her journey and how she became involved with the death penalty issue. Both her books will be available for sale after her presentation. FAIRLAWN — St. George Orthodox Church, 3204 Ridgewood Road, will present its annual holiday extravaganza, buffet and card party Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. The event will include a holiday raffle, door prizes, food and a cash bar. BATH — The HOPE Ministry of Bethel Lutheran Church will provide coats, hats, gloves, clothing and other items to 100 Akron area children in need. GREATER AKRON — The Chapel will mark the 23rd year of World AIDS Day Dec. 1, this year by hosting an educational prayer experience at both the Akron and Green campuses. Comprised of a series of interactive stations, the prayer experience, open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., invites individuals to learn more about AIDS and how to become involved, and also to join in prayer for those around the world struggling with HIV and AIDS. Stations will include an overview of the HIV and AIDS pandemic, stories from The Chapel teams that have traveled and ministered to AIDS-stricken areas in India and Mozambique, and world maps highlighting the plight around the globe, including the continued prevalence here in America. Opportunities for continued education and involvement will be made available as well. In preparation, The Chapel will speak on the issue at Sunday services Nov. 26, as well as distribute 4,000 red ribbons, the internationally recognized symbol of AIDS awareness. √ A Family Service led by the fifth grade, with the Kol Tov Choir, Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. The fifth-grade dinner will take place at 6 p.m.; and
√ First Night of Chanukah: Family Mishpachapalooza, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. A Shabbat Shelly Chanukah dinner will take place at 7 p.m.

WEST AKRON — The Akron Chapter of the Christ Child Society will present “Happy Birthday Baby Jesus” Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Sebastian Church’s Zwisler Hall, 500 Mull Ave. The birthday party will feature a pizza and salad lunch, toy raffle, face painting, Santa, birthday cake and more. Each child bringing a small, unwrapped new baby item will receive a raffle ticket. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children. Seating is limited, and the reservation deadline is Dec. 5.
