PENINSULA — Richard Farkas, executive director of the Humane Society of Greater Akron (HSGA) for four years, resigned from his position at a Board of Directors meeting Nov. 15, effective immediately. The HSGA has initiated the search for a new executive director and will continue its mission uninterrupted to protect the welfare of animals in Summit County, according to HSGA officials.
WEST AKRON — A lecture on the Middle East will take place at the Shaw Jewish Community Center (JCC) Nov. 26. The first program in a year-long “Speaking About Israel” series is “Iran, the Shi’a Crescent and Israel – Myth and Reality,” which will begin at 7 p.m. Moshe Ma’oz, a professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, will be the featured speaker. GREATER AKRON — Portage Path Behavioral Health is looking for support hotline volunteers to provide telephone crisis intervention for Summit Coutny residents. Volunteers are trained to use active listening skills to help callers who are in crisis or thinking about suicide. Training classes are scheduled to begin in January. COLUMBUS — Horse owners can now turn to a comprehensive, research-based Web site for information about such topics as diseases, nutrition and management, reproduction and breeding. The U.S. Land Grant University system has launched HorseQuest, www.extension.org/horses, the first of a series of program topics designed to bring the resources of the Cooperative Extension Service to a broader audience via the Internet. HorseQuest is an interactive Web site that provides news, events, frequently asked questions, chats and “Ask the Expert” features, as well as in-depth learning modules on equine-related topics.
