Millennium Fund for Children grants surpass $250,000

AKRON — The Akron Community Foundation’s Millennium Fund for Children surpassed the $250,000 grant-giving milestone, awarding $37,570 in grants to 24 local children’s programs.
The fund was established by the Akron Beacon Journal and Akron Community Foundation in 1999. In 2000, an advisory committee comprised of contributing donors made the first round of grants from the fund, which totaled $21,128. To date, 169 grants totaling $252,611 have supported children’s programs in the Greater Akron area.
Grants awarded this year include:
Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, for the Smart Start program, $2,000;
Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, for Backpacks for Kids, a weekend food program, $2,000;
American Red Cross, Summit County Chapter, for Youth Leadership first aid and CPR training, $2,000;
Birthcare of Medina County, to provide formula and food for infants and young children in need, $1,500;
Boys and Girls Clubs of Summit County, for the Arts Program, which enables youth to develop creativity and an appreciation of the arts, $2,000;
Fairlawn Elementary School PTA, for the You and Me — Tobacco Free program, $350;
Here’s Hope Horse Farm, for the 2007 summer and fall equestrian training program for special-needs children, $1,800;
International Institute of Akron Inc., to support the ASPIRE Summer Program for children learning English as a second language, $2,000;
Mature Services Inc., to support the Grand Pals program, $700;
Mental Health Association of Summit County Inc., to support Skills for Living, $2,000;
Mobile Meals Inc. Foundation, to purchase supplements for children at nutritional risk, $2,000;
Pregnancy Care of Summit County Inc., to purchase cribs for pregnant teens, $2,000;
Project GRAD Akron, for the Ultimate Boys Club for 25 boys at Schumacher Academy, $750;
Summit County Youth Employment for Success, for Table Manners and Restaurant Etiquette for Teens, $970;
Summit Special Olympic Athletics Club, to support Special Olympic Swimming, $2,000; and
Victim Assistance Program Inc., for the annual Victim Assistance Picnic for children who have been victims or witnesses of violence, $500.
The Millennium Fund is a permanent endowment of Akron Community Foundation that supports arts, civic involvement, education and health and human services projects for children. The fund grows through contributions from residents who donate their last hour’s pay of the year to the fund.
