Akron ‘clean sweep,’exemption
program for disabled residents to be implemented
AKRON — On Dec. 27, Mayor Don Plusquellic announced a special refuse collection program to assist households during the holidays, and a new program that will allow disabled citizens to apply for at-the-door refuse pickup.
During regular city trash pickups
through Jan. 6, all refuse conforming to the city’s
rules and regulations placed curbside will be picked
up on trash days, which
because of the New Year holiday, are delayed by one
day this week.
“We recognize that residents
who have unwrapped a lot of packages or have trees to
dispose of have a problem during this time of year that
is unlike any other week,” Plusquellic said, “so
we have instructed our sanitation crews to pick up everything
placed curbside, whether it fits inside their regular
trash container or not.”
Plusquellic also announced that
effective immediately, the city has made available an
exemption program for disabled individuals who meet
the following criteria:
The resident is physically
unable to place the city-provided refuse container
at curbside.
The resident does not
have a relative, friend or neighbor who can perform
this task for them.
The resident completes
the required form to permit his or her physician to
certify that the resident is under doctor’s care
for treatment of a condition that impairs mobility and
physically restricts the
patient from placing the refuse container at curbside.
Instructions for obtaining the
exemption and forms are available at the Web site www.ci.akron.oh.us/News_Rel
eases/2006/1227.htm or
by calling the 3-1-1 Call Center and requesting the
forms be mailed.

SUMMIT COUNTY — The Summit/Akron
Solid Waste Management Authority (SASWMA) is offering
free telephone book recycling for Summit County residents,
office buildings, businesses and schools through Feb.

Telephone book recycling collection
sites are located at most Akron-Summit County Public
Libraries, all city of Akron Recreation Centers and
other locations. Businesses must call for a pickup by
