Eclectic events entertain at First Night Akron
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Revelers
attending First Night Akron Dec. 31 had their share
of festive activities to choose from to fill the hours
leading up to midnight.
Shown above, Lou Albertson, a
volunteer and artist, helps Tyler Hartman, 9, of Copley,
get a little artsy. Other interactive art events included
make-and-take mask making, folding paper art, ice sculpting
and a hands-on session with The University of Akron
Steel Drum Band.
Local artist Mark Soppeland created
an Enchanted Forest in the Akron-Summit County Main
Branch Library that included Jim Miller, of West Akron,
portraying a bush, as pictured above. A very long line
waited to view the room-sized woodlands.
Like
the Enchanted Forest, most events were staged indoors,
offering shelter from the sporadic rain showers. Shown
at right, Spencer Penrod, 7, of Wadsworth, and his father,
Brian Penrod, gaze in amazement at a bronzed “living
statue” in the Shoppes at Akron Centre.
Copley High School junior David
Kim is pictured below singing his heart out at First
Night Idol. He was a runner-up in the competition.
