Day fit for a King

DOWNTOWN
AKRON — Martin Luther King Jr. Day was celebrated
Jan. 15 in the area at The University of Akron (UA),
where more than two dozen student and community organizations
provided activities for schoolchildren.
With the theme of “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off,” the activities fair featured activities to encourage nonviolence and civic responsibility. Among the children participating in the day’s events were Tajzon James, of West
Akron, shown at top as he chooses the character trait of “hopeful” at a table sponsored by Jumpstart. Volunteer Leah Oser, of Cuyahoga Falls, was on hand to provide encouragement.
Pictured above right, Sammy Baumgartner, also of West Akron, gets creative in coloring a picture of King at the table sponsored by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.
Children
also got to make a hat out of newspaper at the New Generation
Drill Corp. booth. Showing off her creation is Marinna
Atanmo, who is pictured above at left with cousin Quisha
Hilton. Both girls are from West Akron.
The opportunity to learn a new sport was also one of the activities at the event. Shown at left, Dan
Jones, director of the Say Yes to Tennis program, gives some pointers on the game to Kareemah Jackson, of West Akron.
The event, which also included African dancing and the airing of historic speeches by King, was sponsored by UA’s Office of Multicultural Development.
