Ice is nice at Falls River Square
CUYAHOGA
FALLS — The weekend’s cold temperatures
were perfect for an ice exhibition at Falls River Square
in downtown Cuyahoga Falls. Members of the Hospitality
Club at The University of Akron (UA) displayed their
skills in
ice carving at the Jan. 19-21 event, which featured individual and team competition.
Among the students taking part in the event were Nicole Garrison, of Copley, shown at right as she works on her sculpture of a unicorn.
Fellow student Erin Milburn, of Canal Fulton, plugs in the power tools to create her ice sculpture of a fish, as shown below right.
A kangaroo — perhaps UA
mascot Zippy? — is the subject of Highland Square
resident Isaac Delamatre’s sculpture,
shown at top.
The Hospitality Club is made
up of students enrolled in UA’s hospitality management
program. Richard Alford, associate professor emeritus
in the program, coaches the students, who participate
in ice-carving competitions. The weekend’s competition
served as a warmup for the team, which is headed to
the Collegiate Ice Carving National Competition at Frankenmuth,
Mich., Jan. 26-28.
The ice carvings were centered around the ice rink set up at Falls River Square. The rink is open Thursdays through Sundays until Feb. 25. Admission is free to residents of Cuyahoga Falls and $3 for others, with skate rental available for $3. For more information, call (330) 971-8373.
