Resident questions business owner’s intentions
for Highland Square
To the editor:
Following Steve Albrecht’s letter to the editor in the Feb. 15 issue, it should have been noted somehow that he is not merely a businessman in Akron but a developer with interests in Highland Square. He is behind the current development. But he also has openly stated his desire to tear down the buildings from the shoe repair shop down to Two Amigos.
His concern in seeing a quality Portage Path [Community Learning Center] built is biased by his business interest in that strip of buildings. His sanctimonious sentiment of “making new memories” hinges on his inclination to wipe away historic structures for “new and improved” developments.
While Highland Square is a neighborhood that embraces its history, we truly care about Portage Path School and want a new building for the children. But it doesn’t have to come at the expense of the business district.
