Writer clarifies comments in previous letter
In reply to the comments that were placed after my letter to the editor last week, the current Portage Path [Elementary School] site is part of the Buchtel cluster, according to the [Akron Public Schools] Board of Education’s map, and so is the site of the temporary school. It is not far away, as an editor suggested. I was suggesting that the [upcoming] Portage Path Community Learning Center have the site of the temporary school building on [West] Market Street, and that another site for a temporary school building be moved to another location, possibly downtown. I was not suggesting that the children at Portage Path be the last children to have their own school, but that the children in this neighborhood have the permanent use of land that already exists in this neighborhood.
As far as dollar figures, I was multiplying the $9 million times the number of districts, so I stand corrected on the dollar amounts. All the more reason to preserve good landmarks that will attract business and residents who can afford to pay for the new schools. We chose to move into our house in Akron in 2005 because of neighborhood landmarks.
