Manchester student wins VFW District 8 essay contest
NEW FRANKLIN — The obligation of Americans to meet “Freedom’s Challenge” was expressed by Manchester High School senior Joshua Ferry in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) District 8 Voice of Democracy essay contest. Joshua delivered his speech at a banquet March 25 and was awarded a trophy, a patriot pen and a $500 savings bond.
The Manchester Singers, under the leadership of Richard Harper, also presented a patriotic performance at the event.

The Voice of Democracy contest, an annual national event sponsored by the VFW, invites high school students to express their patriotism on a preselected topic. Joshua placed first locally at Copley VFW Post 7971, first at the district competition, and sixth in the state competition in Dayton, where he won a $1,500 scholarship.
The son of David and Leslie Ferry, Joshua is an Eagle Scout and is active in Manchester High School’s National Honor Society.
“Students today need more programs like this,” Joshua said. “Patriotism and pride in our country are dying virtues that need to be resurrected in our society.”
Copley VFW Post 7971 actively supports Manchester Local School District students’ participation in the Voice of Democracy Contest with checks and plaques to all participants, and also awards a scholarship to a deserving senior and sponsors school academic clubs and teams.
