WADSWORTH — McCarthy Sports Inc. has announced that 60 players will compete in the inaugural Collegiate Basketball Invitational at Wadsworth High School April 19-21. The invitational is a national basketball event involving the best 60 senior men’s basketball players from all of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II and Division III and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The event consists of six teams of 10 players in a double elimination tournament. Two sessions of two games each will be played in the first two days, and the championship game will be played on the last day at noon. DOWNTOWN AKRON — The University of Akron’s Student Recreation and Wellness Center will host a sprint triathlon April 22 at 8 a.m. The race will consist of a 500-yard swim, 12 miles on a stationary bike and a 5K run on the outdoor track. Nonmembers will be charged $8. Registration, accepted at the Ocasek Natatorium, is open until the day of the race at 8:45 a.m.
DOWNTOWN AKRON — The new and improved AkronAeros.com Web site was launched March 29. The site includes Aeros statistics, breaking news and player information, along with live scoring updates from all regular-season and playoff games. New to the site this season will be special links that enhance game day experiences, such as the improved photo gallery identifying a fan from each game as the “Fans of the Game.” Fans can check the Web site after the game to see if they were caught on camera at the game. Information about promotions and updates on schedule changes also will be posted.
SUMMIT COUNTY — Season swim passes for lakes at Munroe Falls Metro Park, 521 S. River Road, and Silver Creek Metro Park, 5000 Hametown Road in Norton, are now on sale at www.summitmetroparks.org. Preseason passes for Summit County residents cost $25 for adults and teens, $10 for children ages 2-12 and seniors ages 65 and older. The out-of-county rate is $30 and $15, respectively. There is no cost for children younger than 2. After May 26, the rates will increase by $5. Both swimming areas will be open daily, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., May 26 through Aug. 26. Passes may be purchased in person at the administrative offices, 975 Treaty Line Road, from April 2 until May 25 and at both swimming locations Saturdays and Sundays in May, noon to 3 p.m., and each day throughout the season. During swim season, an admission fee or season pass is required to enter Munroe Falls Metro Park. At Silver Creek, only the beach area requires a daily fee or season pass. Daily admission is $4 for adults and teens and $3 for children ages 2-12.
WEST AKRON — The 27th annual Akron Browns Backers banquet will honor Kamerion Wimbley and the Cleveland Browns Legends class of 2006 May 21 at Tangier restaurant, 532 W. Market St. Wimbley, voted the 2006 Player of the Year by the local Pro Football Writers chapter, will be the guest, along with Legends inductees Doug Dieken, Earnest Byner, Jim Houston and Walt Michaels. Dino Lucarelli and Good Guy winner Brian Russell also will be honored. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Interval Brotherhood Home of Akron. NORTHEAST OHIO — Otto Orf, championship goalkeeper of the Cleveland Crunch and Force, and his staff, including former professional players, are accepting athletes ages 4-18 to participate in the 15th year of Hands On Soccer. Twenty-one communities in Northeast Ohio — including West Akron, Bath, Cuyahoga Falls, Fairlawn and Medina — will play host to the summer soccer camps, with both full and half-day options for boys and girls. Openings are limited for the various programs, with the “starters” and “field player” training available for younger children, and the “goalkeeper,” “advanced” and “high-school” sessions available to players through age 18. Participants will develop teambuilding skills in games, practice drills and activities. Athletes are encouraged to register promptly, as space will be limited to 100 campers per site. PENINSULA — Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association’s (CVNPA) third annual Spring Fever Eco Run 2007 will take place May 5 at Boston Mills Ski area, 7100 Riverview Road. This 5-mile race and 1-mile fun run through the park is open to runners, walkers, families and leashed dogs. Eco-friendly activities such as recycling old running shoes and t-shirts, offering refreshments in compostable cups and saving paper by offering registration available online at www.cvnpa.org also will be available. Awards will be given in the 5-mile race for the top overall female and male finishers and then for the top three finishers in each age group. CLEVELAND — The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon and 10K has established a 501(c)3 charitable organization to raise and distribute funds to other Northeast Ohio nonprofit organizations. Cleveland Marathon Charities will provide funding to nonprofit organizations such as churches, schools and other groups that show their support for health and fitness through active involvement in the race by providing volunteers and spectators, and coordinating their involvement. The 30th annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon will hit the streets of Cleveland May 20 at 7 a.m., and weave runners through historic and scenic parts of the city. GREEN — The Chapel will host an Ambassadors In Sport (AIS) Soccer Camp July 24-28, 2007, at its Green Campus, 1800 Raber Road. The camp, open to boys and girls ages 6-12, will run Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and culminate on Saturday in a “World Cup” competition, followed by a picnic and awards ceremony with families and friends. AIS is an international organization designed to give children an opportunity to develop soccer skills in a positive, encouraging Christian environment. DOWNTOWN AKRON — The University of Akron’s Zips football schedule will include five home contests and nonconference road games at Ohio State, Indiana and Connecticut universities this fall. The Zips will open the season Sept. 1, hosting Army in the inaugural Patriot Bowl, played at the Cleveland Browns Stadium and included in the Zips’ season ticket packages. The Patriot Bowl, organized by the Cleveland Sports Council, will be an annual event played at Browns Stadium and featuring a Mid-American Conference team and a representative from one of the service academies. After the Patriot Bowl, Akron will play four of its next five games on the road. First, the Zips will play consecutive contests vs. Big 10 members, going to Ohio State Sept. 8 and to Indiana Sept. 15. Akron’s first contest in the Rubber Bowl will be Sept. 22 in the 49th renewal of the Kent State University series, playing for bragging rights in the 36th Wagon Wheel Game. Akron will step out of league play the following week (Sept. 29), traveling to Storrs, Conn., to face Big East member Connecticut. The Zips then will play MAC opponents the remainder of the season, starting with an Oct. 6 contest at Western Michigan. The University will welcome back its alumni Oct. 13 as the Zips culminate a week of Homecoming activities by hosting Temple. After a week off, Akron will hit the road for games at Buffalo (Oct. 27) and Bowling Green (Nov. 2). Five days after playing at the latter, the Zips will play the first of back-to-back Wednesday night contests on ESPN2, hosting defending MAC East champion Ohio Nov. 7 and going to Miami Nov. 14. Akron will close the 2007 regular season by honoring its senior class Nov. 23 and hosting 2006 MAC champion Central Michigan. Akron will host its annual Blue and Gold Game, presented by Sky Bank, April 15 at 4 p.m. in the Athletics Field House.
