CANAL FULTON — Sarah
Loven, 16, of Fairlawn Heights,
is the newest member of the nonprofit preprofessional
Ohio Youth Ballet (OYB). The OYB, housed at The Turning
Pointe School of Dance, is under the artistic direction
of Inna Stabrova and Dmitry Tuboltsev, both former principal
dancers who have performed internationally and instructed
across the country. Loven began her dance training at
age 3. After moving to Akron in the summer of 2006,
Loven attended Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. Loven,
who is homeschooled, also has auditioned for and been
accepted to summer intensives at Pacific Northwest Ballet,
Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and Nutmeg Conservatory
for the Arts.
SPRINGFIELD — The
Music Department at Archbishop Hoban High School participated
in the Annual Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA)
Solo and Ensemble Contest at Springfield High School
Feb. 17. In the West Side Leader’s coverage area,
superior ratings went to Hoban soloists Max
Brady, of
West Akron, trombone. Brass quartet members who competed
in the instrumental ensemble competition were Francesca
Stygar, of Norton, French
horn, and Ben Schoeler,
of Peninsula, trombone. The Hoban Chamber Choir performing
as an ensemble received a Superior rating. The ensemble
included: Catie
Huff, Robert Huff and Stephanie
Smith, all
of West Akron. In the Class A division of the solo
vocalist competition, Robert
Huff received a Superior
rating. Many students from surrounding area high schools
participated in the OMEA competition. Music is selected
from a required high school list based on level of difficulty,
Class A being very difficult to Class C, moderately
difficult. Performances are judged by an OMEA judge.
Performance ratings are based on quality of performance
and include superior, excellent, good, fair and poor.
