LAKE — On May 1, American Cancer Society volunteers will mark “May Day for Relay,” as Ohio’s 217 Relay For Life event volunteers join together to paint Ohio purple and support the fight against cancer. To join in, area residents are invited to wear purple, hang purple ribbons and display Relay For Life posters. The Relay For Like in Lake event is scheduled for June 15-16. AKRON — The American Cancer Society (ACS) has designated May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and in honor of that, Summa Health System, in conjunction with the Cleveland Dermatological Society and Akron-based dermatologists, will provide free skin cancer screenings May 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Akron City Hospital, 55 Arch St., on the first floor. Information on skin cancer also will be available from the ACS. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, but it is also highly curable if detected early and treated properly, according to ACS. Preregistration is required and can be done by calling (800) 237-8662).
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Akron
General Medical Center (AGMC) will offer “Dining
With Diabetes” classes
on Wednesdays, May 9-23, from 6 to 8 p.m. Classes will
include demonstrations on how to prepare healthy meals
that use less fat, salt and sugar without cutting taste.
There will be an opportunity to taste a variety of main
dishes, side dishes and desserts. The cost is $10. The
sessions will take place at AGMC, 400 Wabash Ave., in
the Frasche Classroom. Participants
must attend all three classes. To register, which is required,
call (330) 344-2462. This program is sponsored by AGMC
in conjunction with the Summit County Health District
and the Cardiovascular Health Project.
