Law Week opens judicial process in Summit County to
public
SUMMIT COUNTY — The 25th annual Law Week in Summit County will take place the first week of May to coincide with National Law Day May 1. The theme for the national event for 2007 is “Liberty Under Law — Empowering Youth, Assuring Democracy.”
Law week is sponsored by the Akron Bar Association and the state, county and municipal courts in Summit County.
The week will include events for students and adults. The focus of the educational events is helping students and adults understand the importance of the judiciary and how justice happens.
A listing of events follows.
May 1: Ninth District Court of Appeals Oral Arguments, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., University of Akron School of Law Moot Court Room (Classroom 151). Free and open to the public. This is an opportunity for the public to learn about the function and purpose of the Ninth District Court of Appeals. The court will hold oral arguments on six cases sent from the lower courts. May 2: Law Week Luncheon, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Greystone Hall, 103 S. High St., Downtown Akron. Open to the public, attorneys and the judiciary by reservation only. Cost: $20. This annual luncheon honors members of the bar with 50 years of service. Winners of the middle and high school essay contest “There Ought to Be a Law” will be announced. Winners will be awarded savings bonds. The Akron Bar Association also will announce the 2007 winner of the Liberty Bell Award, given to a member of the bar exemplifying community service. May 3: Court open houses at county and municipal courts. Free and open to the public. Large groups require advance notice.

Student programs for high school students from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Rotating, continuous educational presentations in each court, including: Domestic Relations — “Dating: Infinity and Beyond,” how the relationship decisions you make now may affect you and your family now and in the future; General Division — understanding criminal justice system and how technology impacts the system; and Probate Court — understanding the probate process.
Adult programs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Open house and court tours in addition to rotating, continuous education programs in each court: Domestic Relations — understanding how domestic relations courts work, parentage, divorce and civil protection orders; General Division — tour and demonstration of the new technology court; and Probate Court — understanding the probate process.

Tours of the Juvenile Court Center, Family Resource Center, Crossroads Program, Teen Court Hearings, a traffic court overview and questions and answers with Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio will be available.
A Night at the Movies, 6 to 9 p.m., Akron-Summit County Main Branch Library, 60 S. High St., Downtown Akron. Free and open to the public. “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be followed by a discussion between students and members of the Akron Bar Association.
May 4: The Red Mass, noon, St. Bernard Church, 44 University Ave., Downtown Akron. Free and open to the public. The Red Mass is named for the red vestments worn during its celebration and the red gowns worn by judges in the Middle Ages. Today such Masses are celebrated at the opening of councils, synods, etc., to invoke the gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel and fortitude. Contact: Starla Brainard, (330) 253-5007, ext 101.
Race Judicata. Fun Walk at 5:30 p.m., race at 6 p.m. Open to the public. Registration table at the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority parking lot, 100 W. Cedar St., Downtown Akron. All proceeds will benefit Community Legal Aid. Preregistration fee: $12 for the race or $20 for the race and Jammin’ for Justice. Day-of-race entry fee: $15 or $25. Long-sleeved T-shirts will be given to the first 200 entrants. Post-race party at Jillian’s, 363 S. Main St., Downtown Akron. Awards will be presented. Jammin’ for Justice, 7 p.m., Barley House, 222 S. Main St., Downtown Akron. Open to the public. Tickets: $15. A musical trial will take place, as lawyers settle their disputes on stage. Only one band will win acquittal. The trial will be emceed by Jim Chenot, of 91.3 — The Summit. Proceeds will benefit the Akron Bar Association’s promotion and recognition of pro bono and community service by local attorneys and the Community Legal Aid’s Volunteer Services Program.
