All moms should be celebrated this Mother’s
Day

PENINSULA — Human moms aren’t the only ones that should be celebrated this weekend for Mother’s Day.
Furry mothers also deserve their time in the spotlight. The Humane Society of Greater Akron (HSGA), located at 4908 Quick Road, has several four-legged moms and their young that are looking for homes this spring. Pictured below is Gracie, a gray and brown cat with her three 10-day-old kittens. Another mother cat, Ella, is shown above tending to some of her six kittens, who are approximately 3 weeks old.
Canine mother Melinda, pictured at bottom, looks over her six puppies as they huddle together for warmth. The puppies are 10 days old.
According to Sarah Aiken, director of animal operations for the HSGA, it’s very common for the organization to have mother cats or dogs and their babies. Aiken said the kittens and puppies will not be available for adoption until they are spayed or fixed, which will be at 8 weeks old for the kittens and between 10 and 14 weeks for the puppies. While the animal families are a delight to watch, Aiken said the HSGA would rather not see the number of parent pets it sees.
“Spaying and neutering is so important to put an end to unwanted animals,” Aiken said. “If there were fewer of them, it would make our job so much easier.”
The HSGA offers low-cost spaying and neutering once a month. Participation is subject to income eligibility. The next clinic will take place June 21.
Aiken added she is thrilled to see that the Summit County Animal Control agency is about to begin spaying and neutering at its shelter, at 460 E. North St. in Akron.
“There is hope that we will see fewer unwanted animals in our community,” Aiken said.
