DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Akron-Summit County Public Library spelled itself to victory at the Corporate Spelling Bee for Literacy May 2. Corporate teams from across the city competed against a team of middle and high school students. Friends of Main Library won the bee for the fifth time since 1989, taking the title from last year’s winner, Akron Children’s Hospital. Other teams in the competition included: General Metals Powder Co., United Way of Summit County and Time Warner Cable. Tim Daugherty, of WONE-FM, emceed the event, and Marcy Pappafava, of WAKR News, and Caesar Carrino and James Buchanan, both professors at The University of Akron, served as judges. Proceeds benefit Project Learn’s adult and family literacy programs. Team sponsorship and other donations helped raise more than $5,000.
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Akron SCORE will offer a free “Business Basics Workshop” for individuals interested in learning about available resources to start or expand small businesses in Northeast Ohio. The workshop will take place May 23 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at One Cascade Plaza, in the Conference Room on the 17th floor (the National City Bank Building, located at Main and Bowery streets). SUMMIT COUNTY — Heavenly Touch Maids has become a local chapter of Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit organization formed in 2006 that is dedicated to providing free and discounted cleaning services for cancer patients. “We are committed to providing the gift of a clean home to women undergoing treatment for cancer through this foundation,” said President Debbie Pickens. DOWNTOWN AKRON — Nicholas George, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, and Harvey Nelson, co-CEO of Main Street Gourmet, both of Bath, were recently honored by The University of Akron (UA) during its annual Entrepreneurship Awards. The awards, sponsored by UA’s Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and the College of Business Administration, were presented at the recent Donald L. Kaufman Business Speaker Series luncheon. George received the Outstanding Entrepreneurial Leadership Award for showing extraordinary entrepreneurial leadership abilities. Nelson received the Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year Award for making the biggest impact on UA’s entrepreneurship program.
