Walsh Warriors score narrow victory over rival Hoban
WEST AKRON — Archbishop Hoban High School. Walsh Jesuit High School. Two schools that have a rich tradition in a number of sports — even the ones that aren’t state-sanctioned yet.
Tradition was on display as a number of Knights and Warriors took the field at Hoban High School for a hotly contested lacrosse matchup that saw Walsh put another notch in the win column with a narrow 8-7 victory May 18.
Ryan Boylan, Kevin Geraci and Zach Jakubek led the way for the Warriors as each scored two goals. Greg Frye and Ryan Hess added one apiece in adding to the Walsh attack.
Warrior midfielder Kevin Connor, shown above right, cradles the ball as he looks around for an open teammate. Hoban’s Michael Kallenbach was one of three Knights to record a multi-goal game. Midfielder Sam Scala and attackman Peter Van Auker also chipped in two goals on the day, while Derek Hobart scored once.
Hoban attackman Aaron Dodgson (No. 10), shown above, takes a shot on goal as Frye (No. 11) tries to block with his crosse. Dodgson couldn’t find the net on this play, which has been a problem for a number of attackmen that have faced Walsh goalie Tony Tatro. Tatro (No. 1) continued a season of strong play in recording 11 saves on the day. Statistically, he ranks fifth in the state with a save percentage of 69.6.
The game was the final regular season contest for both teams before postseason play began May 21. Hoban took the field against first-round opponent Solon High School and dropped another close game, losing 12-10. Top-seeded Walsh handily beat Beachwood High School 28-0, advancing to play Green High School May 23. Walsh won against Green by a score of 19-5.
