DOWNTOWN AKRON — Akron General Medical Center (AGMC) has received several national marketing awards by the Healthcare Marketing Report, a leading national publication covering all aspects of health care marketing, advertising and strategic business development, including: the Gold Award, Total Advertising Campaign (without TV), Akron General LifeStyles, North Presales Campaign; Bronze Award, Web site/Home Page, Bariatric Web Site; Bronze Award, for Newspaper Advertising Series, Akron General LifeStyles, North Presales Campaign; and Merit Award, Web site/Home page, Heart and Vascular Web site. A record number of 4,300 entries were received in this year’s competition, making the awards the largest health care advertising awards competition, according to AGMC officials.
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Four University of Akron educators received the 2007 Celebration of Excellence in Learning and Teaching awards at a recent reception, including: Katharine Owens, of Uniontown, who received the Outstanding Teacher-Scholar Award; Heather Pollock, of Akron, who received the Outstanding Part-Time Teacher Award; Devon Cummings, of Barberton, who received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award (doctoral student); and Patty Shelton, of Cuyahoga Falls, who received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award (master’s level).
COPLEY — Karen Powell, a 1995 graduate of Copley High School and a science teacher at Romulus Community High School (CHS), has received the Michigan Alternative Education Organization’s 2007 Outstanding Teacher of the Year award. Powell, formerly Karen Frazier, attended Eastern Michigan University for her undergraduate studies and received a master’s degree in educational leadership from Madonna University in Livonia, Mich. Romulus CHS is a nontraditional high school serving 275 at-risk students each year.
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Mary Verstraete, associate professor of biomedical engineering; Dan Ely, professor of biology; and Alexei Sokolov, professor of polymer science, were recognized for their classroom and research excellence during The University of Akron’s (UA) annual Founders Day luncheon, which took place May 4. Verstraete received an Outstanding Teacher Award for dedication toward quality in undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering education. Ely and Sokolov received Outstanding Researcher Awards. Ely’s primary research interest is studying the mechanisms of high blood pressure. Sokolov is a leading expert in the analysis of the dynamics and nanostructures of complex systems. He also is a leader in the field of nano-optics. Also awarded at the luncheon were Thelma Bell and Susan Horn, who won Shared Leadership Awards. Bell, an office manger in the Department of English, won in the staff category. Horn, writing coordinator in Wayne College, won in the contract professional category. Victor Pinheiro, chair of the Department of Sport Science and Wellness Education, won the Ideas that Work Award for implementing three Student Appreciation Days that contributed to greater spirit and tradition on campus, according to UA officials.
