DOWNTOWN AKRON — Community members are invited to let go of stress and experience relaxation on a Labyrinth walk June 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Akron General Medical Center’s Conference Auditorium at 400 Wabash Ave. The labyrinth is an archetype, a divine imprint, found in all religious traditions in various forms around the world, according to hospital officials. Participants can walk a replica of the Chartres labyrinth, laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France around 1220. Nancy Nierman Baker, an art therapist/clinical counselor in the Partial Hospitalization Department, who is also a certified labyrinth facilitator, will be on hand to provide information, history and tradition. No experience is necessary. Music on the harp will be provided by Kate Valentine, a chaplain in the Spiritual Care Department. DOWNTOWN AKRON — Summa Health System is one of 10 community oncology practices in the country to receive honors from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for its efforts in improving the care of people with cancer through clinical research, according to hospital officials. In 2006, Summa enrolled 125 patients into clinical trials, enabling them to receive experimental chemo-therapeutic agents, targeted monoclonal antibody treatments and cutting-edge radiation treatments. Summa also provided the opportunity for community members to participate in trials for prevention of breast and prostate cancer. Summa has 80 clinical trials under way for almost every type and stage of cancer, according to hospital officials. The 2007 Clinical Trial Participation Award will be presented to Summa June 2 at ASCO’s annual meeting in Chicago.
