MERRIMAN VALLEY — The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) will present a Recreational Coach Workshop (RCW) June 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Towpath Tennis Center. The session is one of more than 200 events taking place across the nation in 2007 as part of a national initiative by the USTA. RCWs are interactive, on-court training programs designed for tennis teachers and coaches working with players at the recreational level. Each workshop is six hours long and conducted by a certified tennis professional specifically trained for the RCW program. The goal of the program is to help all teachers, coaches and those interested in learning how to become a recreational coach with instruction, fresh and innovative ideas and easy-to-follow resources. Every workshop participant will receive lesson plans and sample equipment. The cost is $12 for those who register before May 22 and $15 for later entries. MEDINA — Century Cycles and Giant Bicycle will co-host a Giant Mountain Bike Demo Day June 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Reagan Park, located on Weymouth Road. Bicycle manufacturer Giant will provide five high-end mountain bikes to ride the trails at Reagan Park, and Century Cycles staff will offer product giveaways. The event is free and open to participants at all skill levels. All riders are required to wear bicycle helmets. The Anthem mountain bike, which was recently named a finalist in Bicycling magazine’s 2007 Editor’s Choice Awards for Best XC Performance Mountain Bike, and Trance mountain bike will be available for use. PENINSULA — Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association (CVNPA) is inviting participants to take the Cuyahoga Challenge. Presented by CVNPA and CVNP and sponsored by North Akron Savings Bank, the free program consists of a variety of hiking trails, some of which are suitable for running or walking with a dog. Participants who hike 10 or more of the designated trails will receive a commemorative patch designed by local artist Chuck Ayers. Participants may hike the selected trails individually or attend ranger-led programs on qualifying trails. To qualify, hikes must take place between June 1 and Sept. 30. WEST AKRON — Learn to swim classes will be offered weekday mornings at the Firestone High School Natatorium, including: Session I — June 11-22, $50; Session II — June 25 to July 6, $45; Session III — July 9-20, $50; Session IV — July 23 to Aug. 3, $50; and Session V — Aug. 6-10, $25. Level I-III classes will be 10 to 10:45 a.m., while level III-VI classes will be 11 to 11:45 a.m. Preschool classes are offered noon to 12:30 p.m. Evening lessons will be offered Mondays through Thursdays, including: Session I — June 11-21, $40; Session II — June 26 to July 6, $35; Session III — July 9-19, $40; Session IV — July 23 to Aug. 2, $40; and Session V — Aug. 6-9, $20. Level I and II classes will be 5-5:45 p.m., while level III and IV will be 6-6:45 p.m. Registration for sessions will take place May 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Firestone Natatorium. Checks should be made payable to the Akron Board of Education. The Firestone Akron Swim Team, affiliated with USA Swimming, is open to elementary, middle and senior high and college-age swimmers. Swimmers of all abilities are welcomed to be part of the team. Practice times vary with age and ability level of the swimmer.
