DOWNTOWN AKRON — VanDevere Pontiac, Buick, Kia and Right to Life of Summit County have awarded four new annual scholarships to young pro-life leaders at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. The following students received inaugural scholarships for the 2006- 07 school year: Anthony Joyce, of Cuyahoga Falls and a member of St. Joseph Church; Savannah Norman, of West Akron and a member of St. Hilary Parish; and Sarah Piatt, of Medina and a member of Our Lady of Grace Church. These students were recognized for their active volunteerism for Right to Life and the Pro-Life Youth Congress, leadership skills and commitment to community service.
CUYAHOGA FALLS — Tara Lynn Snyder graduated cum laude from The University of Akron with a degree in fiber arts May 12.
GREATER AKRON — The following Malone College students were recently recognized as outstanding graduating seniors in their majors: Brett Fogle, of Norton, Business Administration; and Erin Brown, of Copley, Liberal Arts.
ATHENS — Kelly Brown, of Copley, was recently recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization at Ohio University. Kelly, who has been on the Dean’s List, is a 2005 graduate of Revere High School and a sophomore studying photo journalism.
NORTON — PPG Industries Inc. recently announced that Adam Gibson, son of Kenneth and Neva Gibson, is the recipient of a $1,500 per year, four-year plant community scholarship from the PPG Industries Foundation. Selections were based on academic record, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and community involvement in addition to the applicant’s own statement. Adam is a senior at Norton High School and will attend Kent State University. He plans to major in education.
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Students who successfully passed The Supreme Court of Ohio February 2007 bar examination were administered their oaths during a special public session of The Supreme Court May 14 at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus. Among The University of Akron School of Law graduates who passed the exam were: from Akron — Jeffrey Carr, Kara Kramer, Nicole Quester and Constantine Toscidis; from Copley — Christopher Hilker; from Cuyahoga Falls — Heather Gerhardt; from Fairlawn — Joseph Lentivech III and Meaghan Quinn; and from Norton — John Scarito.
ASHLAND — Mollie Sturm, of West Akron, was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta at Ashland University. Mollie is the daughter of Gregory and Deborah Sturm and is majoring in mathematics. Alpha Lambda Delta is a freshman honorary society that is open to full-time freshman students who earn a scholastic average of 3.5 or better at a four-year college or university.
FAIRLAWN — St. Hilary School eighth-grader Kevin Geary participated in the 2007 Midwest Academic Talent Search by taking the ACT test, typically used as a college entrance exam for high school seniors. He scored well in every area and achieved a composite score of 25. Kevin is the son of Bernie and Jody Geary, of Fairlawn.
BRECKSVILLE — The following Cuyahoga Valley Career Center students from the Revere Local Schools District were honored for their skill performances in various competitions sponsored by Business Professionals of America; Cisco Internetworking; Distributive Education Clubs of America; SkillsUSA; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America; and various graphic arts competitions.

ASHLAND — Kristen Rupert, of Fairlawn, recently was awarded the Delta Zeta senior honor at Ashland University. She is the daughter of Karen Rupert and is majoring in integrated social studies education.
CINCINNATI — Xavier University has presented two local students with a scholarship. Susan Lloyd, of Akron, received a Trustee Scholarship. She is a graduating senior at Archbishop Hoban High School, where she is active in volleyball, yearbook and service and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Tom and Kathy Lloyd. Nicole Shovlin, of Akron, accepted a Schawe Scholarship. She is a graduating senior at Walsh Jesuit High School, where she is active in athletics, French Club and the French National Honor Society and band, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Tim and Rosanne Shovlin and plans to major in biology.
MEDINA — Shannon Clarke, Elizabeth Magg and Kaitlyn Wires, all of the Medina area, were three of seven students selected as recipients of youth service scholarship awards based on their volunteer involvement both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as educational goals and career aspirations. The United Way of Medina County and the Medina Sunrise Rotary & Medina Rotary joined together to award the students. Clarke received a $1,500 scholarship from the Sunrise Rotary Club, Magg received a $1,250 Donald E. Tubbs scholarship award and Wires received a $1,250 Charles W. York scholarship award. Also, the students were three of 54 Medina County students who received commendations from the Medina County Board of Commissioners, state Rep. Betty Sutton (13th District), state Sen. Ron Amstutz (22nd District) and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown for their volunteer efforts in the community. A special commendation also was presented to the students from Gov. Ted Strickland.
GRANGER — Three students from area high schools have received a $2,000 scholarship from the Tire Town Chapter, International Association of Administrative Professionals. From the West Side Leader readership area, Kenneth Kortan, a senior at Highland High School, was awarded the Mary Louise Gamble Memorial Scholarship. He will attend Kent State University to study business administration.
