Hope Walk raises funds, awareness for cancer center

DOWNTOWN AKRON — Stewart’s Caring Place, the Fairlawn cancer support center, hosted its first Hope Walk and Reunion Picnic May 26 at Lock 3 Park.
The inaugural event kicked off with the fund-raising walk, led by grand marshal and Copley resident Mimi Surloff-Markis, shown above with her husband, Blair Markis. Stewart’s Caring place was named after Stewart Surloff, Mimi Surloff-Markis’ late husband.
Among those taking part in the walk were, pictured above right, Kevin Kramer, 13, and Hannah Kramer, 11, of Bath; Kendall Packo, 11, and Grant Packo, 9, of Copley, and John Milo, 11, of Bath. The youngsters walked in memory of Amy Klein, the mother of their friends Julia and Emma Klein.
The picnic that followed featured activities for children, such as inflatables and crafts. Phoebe Minorik, 6, of Bath, is shown below modeling the visor she decorated at the free Pat Catan’s booth.
The event also featured recognition for those who raised the most money for the walk. Shown above, from left, are Jane Taylor, of Medina, chairperson for the walk, who collected the most donations; Melisssa Maxwell, of Medina,
second place in donations collected; Evelyn DiBello, of Medina, development director for Stewart’s Caring Place, who came in third place in donations collected; and Mimi Surloff-Markis, who came in fourth place.
