DOWNTOWN AKRON — Olympic ice carving champion and University of Akron (UA) alumnus Aaron Costic will teach an ice carving class during UA’s fall semester. Costic, a 2006 Olympic gold medalist in ice carving, will teach the introductory course on Wednesdays from 3:20 to 5 p.m. in Gallucci Hall. Costic trained UA’s Hospitality Management Ice-Carving Team for the 2007 National Collegiate Championships, where it took first place. Course participants have the potential to join the team. Members use chain saws and Japanese hand chisels to carve 300-pound blocks of ice, and blowtorches to polish the finished carvings. UA’s ice festival last January is slated to become an annual event and include other collegiate ice carving teams. The ice carving course, number 2280290-001, “Special Topics: Introduction to Ice Carving,” carries two credit hours. For more information, call (330) 972-7113.
