Commercial driver charged in
fatal crash
COPLEY — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle fatal accident that occurred June 3 at 5:03 p.m. on state Route 18 (Medina Road) at the intersection with Montrose West Avenue.
According to the patrol, driver Holly Hansen, 45, of Brunswick, was killed when the car she was driving was struck by a Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Donald Nickell, 44, of Cambridge. Hansen’s vehicle was northbound on Montrose West, entering the intersection, and the truck was eastbound on Route 18 when it reportedly failed to stop for a red light and struck Hansen’s car on the driver’s side.
Passengers Faith Jones, 72, of Berea, and Rebecca Hansen, 16, of Brunswick, were injured. Jones was transported by EMS to Akron General Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition at presstime.
Rebecca Hansen was transported by EMS to Akron Children’s Hospital. She has been discharged.
Nickell was not injured. He was arrested at the scene and charged with vehicular homicide and a traffic signal violation and incarcerated at the Summit County Jail, according to the patrol.
The patrol states alcohol and drugs are not suspected in the crash and safety belts were in use.
Holly Hansen is Summit County’s 21st traffic fatality this year, according to the patrol.
