DOWNTOWN AKRON — Akron SCORE will offer a free “Business Basics Workshop” for individuals interested in learning about resources that are available to start or expand small businesses in Northeast Ohio. The workshop will take place Aug. 22 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the conference room on the 17th floor of 1 Cascade Plaza, located at the corner of Main and Bowery streets. MONTROSE — The University of Akron will sponsor two free breakfast meetings to demonstrate how Lean and Six Sigma can help deliver superior customer service, reduce waste and lead to immediate, quantifiable improvements. The Lean overview will take place Aug. 28. The Six Sigma overview will be Sept. 6. Both will run from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Akron General Health & Wellness Center — West, 4125 Medina Road. The overviews are sponsored by Summit College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division, which offers Six Sigma and Lean training. Seating is limited. GREATER AKRON — Once again, Macy’s and Reading Is Fundamental Inc. (RIF) have joined forces to present “Be One for the Books.” The program provides new books and literacy resources to underserved children throughout the nation. Macy’s customers will be able to donate $3 to RIF in any Macy’s children’s department until Sept. 3. RIF will use $1 of the donation to support local RIF programs; $1 to fund the RIF Multicultural Literacy Campaign, which provides book collections to schools and promotes early childhood literacy; and $1 to support reading resources for children nationwide. In return for a donation, Macy’s will provide each customer with a savings pass for $10 off a purchase of $50 or more. Last year, nearly 500,000 Macy’s customers donated more than $1.2 million to support RIF programs during the campaign, according to company officials.
