FAIRLAWN — St. Hilary Parish will kick off a year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary with a festival Sept. 2. Spiritfest will take place on the parish grounds at 2750 W. Market St. from noon to 8:30 p.m., rain or shine. This free event is open to the public. While it will feature booths representing a variety of area restaurants, families also are welcome to bring picnic food and beverages. Highlights of the event will include a classic car show, rummage sale, pony rides, live music, wine and beer tents, craft and souvenir booths, contests and games for adults and children. Spiritfest will set the tone for a Faith-in-Action-themed year of celebration and evangelization for the parish, according to the Rev. Steven Brunovsky, pastor of St. Hilary.
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Sister Mary Catherine Hilkert, O.P., PhD, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron and professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, will address the First Friday Club luncheon Sept. 7 in an hour-long talk at noon at the Martin University Center at The University of Akron, 105 Fir Hill. Her topic will be “How Original is Sin?” Sister Hilkert has a doctorate from Catholic University of America and has taught courses on Christian anthropology. She also is author of many books, is coeditor of “The Praxis of the Reign of God: An Introduction to the Theology of Edward Schillebeeckx” and has published many articles on contemporary theology, spirituality and preaching. She has taught religious studies and co-chaired the department of religious studies at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. The cost of the luncheon is $14. NORTON — Area Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregations will sponsor disaster response training sessions Oct. 6 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3281 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road. Level I is an overview of disaster response and will assist participants in identifying areas of strengths during times of disaster. Level I will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Level II training will follow from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and covers strengths of participants, such as case management, volunteer coordination, donations management, spiritual care, individual preparedness and congregational preparedness. The training is open to anyone. A $25 fee includes the manual, identification badge and card, certificate, T-shirt and both sessions. For more information, call the church at (330) 825-3217.
