Cancer Fund
STOW — The Seventh Annual Dolores Sawan Family Walk and 5K Memorial Run for Ovarian Cancer will take place Sept. 8 at the Akron General Health & Wellness Center — North, 4300 Allen Road. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 1-mile walk at 9 a.m. and the 5K memorial run at 9:30 a.m. This event supports education, research and awareness of ovarian cancer. The registration fees support the Dolores Sawan Ovarian Cancer Fund. Shortly after Dolores Sawan was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she established the fund through the Akron General Development Foundation. Sawan lost her battle with ovarian cancer in May 1998. The cost is $17 to register, but families who register together will be able to register for only $15 per person. Family registration must be submitted together. In conjunction with this year’s event, there will be a series of free informative talks Sept. 7 at the Akron General Conference Center Auditorium. The session will run from 1:30 to 4 p.m., and refreshments will be served. Subjects will include: “Screening for Ovarian Cancer: Why Numbers Matter”; “New Developments in the Treatment of Ovarian Cancer: IP Chemotherapy”; and “Ovarian Cancer Survivorship, What’s Next?” Call (330) 344-AGMC (2462) for more information and reservations.

CLEVELAND — The Up Side of Downs of Greater Cleveland will present its Seventh Annual Northeast Ohio Buddy Walk Sept. 8 at Jacobs Field, 2401 Ontario St. Registration will start at 9 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. The Buddy Walk is a 1-mile pledge walk to increase public awareness and acceptance of Down syndrome. The walk raises funds to support programs and services for people with Down syndrome. Those who would like to participate must preregister by Aug. 25. & Diamonds “Creating Hope & Healing Children”
will take place Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. at The University
of Akron Student Union. The goal of the new event is
to fund an on-site research laboratory at the Showers
Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders
at Akron Children’s Hospital. The evening will
feature a live auction, including a Gregg Ruth designer
diamond necklace donated by Sterling Jewelers. Other
prizes include an Aspen getaway; a stay at The Boulders
Resort and Golden Door Spa in Scottsdale, Ariz.; a trip
to the Carvelle Resort in Myrtle Beach; a LeBron James
game jersey; a cast-autographed script from “CSI:NY,”
