Primary School students and residents of the city of
Green were among many worldwide to participate in the
art and literacy project Pinwheels for Peace Sept. 21,
the International Day of Peace.
Approximately 375 Herberich students in kindergarten through fourth grade “planted” a pinwheel they made in the front lawn of the Smith Road building, shown below right.
The colorful, hand-made pinwheels contained the symbol and words for peace written in a variety of languages, shown above right.
Herberich art teacher Cathy Wooley explained the project also included a study of literature about peace and discussions on conflict resolutions.
“This is a powerful, artistic statement to encourage students to act in peaceful ways at school and at home,” she said.
In Green, pinwheels decorated by children and adults last weekend at Art-A-Palooza, the city of Green’s third annual arts festival, and at FreedomFest, the city’s 15th anniversary celebration, which was held in June, are displayed on the lawn of the Green Branch Library, near the corner of Town Park Boulevard and Massillon Road. The display is shown at top.
This is the first year Green has participated in the project.
Started in 2005 by two art teachers
in Florida, the project grew to include more than 1
million pinwheels planted in more than 2,350 locations
in 2006 by school children
and others in the United States, Canada, South America,
Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Africa.
