STVM presents 22nd
annual Showcase
DOWNTOWN AKRON — On Oct. 13, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School (STVM) will present its 22nd annual silent and oral auction, known as Showcase, the single largest fund-raiser for STVM. This year’s goal is to raise $300,000.
According to Joanne Zaratsian, director of fiscal resources, this year’s fund-raiser has received a significant boost by Ralph Bernard, of Akron, who pledged a $50,000 matching gift to funds raised at Showcase for the Irish Opportunity Scholarships. These $1,000 scholarships are provided to students who might not otherwise have an opportunity to attend STVM.
“Mr. Bernard, who has made many other generous donations to our school, makes these gifts in honor of his beloved wife, the late Florence (O’Neil) Bernard, who graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1933,” Zaratsian said. “His thoughtful gifts are a beautiful symbol of their love and the generous spirit he and his wife shared.”
In addition to making donations to the scholarship fund during the oral auction, Showcase guests may bid on auction items ranging from trips and jewelry to sporting events and golf packages.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. All ticket levels include dinner and an open bar featuring a variety of specialty martinis. Corporate tables of eight are $1,500; Irish Patron tickets are $150 per person; and dinner guest tickets are $75 per person.
For details, call co-chairs Jerry Kelly or Jennifer Ringer at (330) 253-9113, ext. 43.
Those unable to attend Showcase may make a donation toward the Bernard match by calling Zaratsian at (330) 253-9113, ext. 12.
Panel outlines responsibility,
role of school boards
DOWNTOWN AKRON — The School Board Governance Project (SBGP) will sponsor a seminar called “School Boards: They Affect Us All” Oct. 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Akron-Summit County Main Branch Library, 60 S. High St. This seminar is free and open to the public.
This seminar is subtitled “What You Need to Know Before You Cast Your Vote in November.” The panel discussion and question-and-answer period with the audience will help to clarify the work, role and the responsibility of school boards in the education of youth, according to SBGP officials.
The panel will consist of a school superintendent, school treasurer and teacher union representative.
“Many people have misconceptions about the school board’s job in the education of our youth and operation of our schools,” said Susan Vogelsang, chair of the SBGP. “We hope to give people information about what they should expect from this vital governmental body so people can cast a more informed vote for school board this fall.”
Attendees can utilize the library parking deck for free after 6 p.m.
The SBGP is a collaboration of the District 13 Akron Council of PTAs, Akron Children’s Hospital, the League of Women Voters of the Akron Area, Summit Family and Children’s First Council, United Way of Summit County and the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.
