Hoban athletics project gets signal to move forward

Plans for improvements to the Archbishop Hoban High School Athletic Complex received a green light as Akron City Council members voted to place a vacation plat for four parcels on several streets around the site into the consent agenda at the Oct. 29 meeting. The item is scheduled for a vote at next week’s meeting.
The city plans to vacate a total of .44 acre of land at Hoban and Knights courts and Willet and Windsor streets. Hoban Athletic Director Sean Quinn said the lots would be used to extend soccer facilities and will involve increasing the grade of the lots to the same grade of the surrounding area, allowing for the creation of another practice field. In other business, Council approved legislation that permits fire and police personnel to purchase military service credits on a tax-deferred basis by payroll deduction that will go toward pensions, and authorized the finance director to pay $399,000 for the city’s participation in miscellaneous organizations, associations and agencies.
The next Akron City Council meeting is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in Council chambers on the third floor of the Municipal Building, 166 S. High St. Committee meetings are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. that day.
