Justice Stratton addresses mental health issues
CUYAHOGA FALLS — Mental Health
America of Summit County (MHASC) hosted Supreme Court
of Ohio Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton as the keynote
speaker at its annual meeting Oct. 3.
Stratton addressed the importance of mental health education in school systems and the need for mental health education and instruction for future teachers, according to MHASC officials. Programs like Red Flags, which targets schools, children and families, help people recognize the early warning signs of mental illness and affect treatment that can change a young person’s life for the better, said Stratton. Ohio recently received a MacArthur Foundation Grant for the “Models for Change Initiative,” which works toward a more effective and developmentally appropriate juvenile justice system, according to MHASC.
“Mental wellness is imperative
for youth to succeed not only emotionally but academically
and socially, as well,” explained Angela Tucker
Cooper, executive director of MHASC.
